Although this August long weekend may involve less attending music or craft beer festivals and other big events, there are still lots of activities happening around Ontario this weekend, no matter where you live. We’ve put together a list of suggestions for what to do around the province this weekend.
Drive-In Movies
As classic as it gets, drive-ins give you and your family a fun, socially-distant option to catch a flick. Whether you’re in the GTA and want to visit the 5 Drive-In in Oakville, The Stardust just north of Newmarket, or the multitude of drive-ins popping up in Cadillac Fairview shopping malls across the region, this is a perfect Saturday night escape.
Wine Tours
Ontario wine country still has plenty to offer for a girls’ weekend or couple’s trip. In both Niagara and Prince Edward County, most tours are still operating and wineries are open for visitors. If you’re planning on visiting, just be sure to call ahead, as many tasting rooms and restaurants will require a reservation.
City Walking Tours
If you’re planning on staying in the city but still want to get out and stretch your legs, many cities in Ontario offer both free and paid walking tours. In Ottawa, you can learn about the insider history of the city at the center of political life in Canada. Kingston also has a spookier version of a city tour, with socially distanced ghost tours of Downtown Kingston or Fort Henry.
Camping
Since 1962, Kampgrounds of America (KOA) have been providing families with unforgettable memories, giving them a destination to set up campgrounds at hundreds of locations around North America. This August long weekend, the Toronto West KOA, located in Campbellville, ON, is hosting its KOA Long Weekend Carnival so you and the kids can participate in some fun and exciting outdoorsy activities.
Watersports and Outdoor Activities
In Muskoka, there are no shortage of outdoor activities for the whole family to enjoy, any weekend of the summer. Although popular family sport Santa’s Village remains closed, the nearby Sportsland and Muskoka Ziplines and Aerial Park in Bracebridge is open for treetop climbing, Go-Karts, and mini golf. Throughout Muskoka there are also many outfitters and resorts that will rent out kayaks, canoes and paddleboards so you can spend your day on the water. Farmers Markets
Farmers markets are back up and running in most small towns and cities in the province. In the Windsor area, the Farmers Markets in Downton Windsor and Amherstburg are running every Saturday, including August 1st.
The renowned St. Jacobs Farmer’s Market is also open to the public every Thursday and Saturday, year-round. Featuring over 300 local vendors, you and your family are sure to come back home with a full car!
