Social Distance-Friendly Summer Fun Ideas in Ontario

As our economy gradually re-opens, we know Ontarians will look for safe ways to travel and expect “staycations” to top the list. Staying close to home with road trips can respect social-distancing measures, allowing for a much-needed change of pace and scenery, and let us all enjoy the summertime a little more. It just means getting a little creative with ideas, but don’t worry, at ONroute we’re ON it!

Here are our top social distance-friendly ideas for the summer:

Hike at Ontario Parks

All of Ontario’s provincial parks and conservation reserves re-opened in mid-May, offering a perfect way to be active outside, get fresh air, and enjoy Ontario’s beautiful scenery. While camping and access to some parts of the parks and on-site facilities remain closed, activities like hiking, walking, and fishing are allowed. Ontario Parks is asking that visitors try to visit the parks closest to them for extra safety. Be sure to check the Ontario Parks COVID-19 webpage for the latest details.

Pack a Picnic

Many local parks are open for people to have picnics on the green space (though picnic tables may remain closed). Packing food from home or getting takeout from a local restaurant, or even your closest ONroute, are great ways to enjoy a meal outdoors. All 23 of our plazas have dedicated green space and picnic areas open to the public, which is a great option for incorporating outdoor eating into your travels.

Some stipulations to keep in mind include remaining two metres away from other people within the park and being there with only those belonging to your household. Visit the Ontario Government’s COVID-19 page for additional details.

Explore a New Trail

Many local trails are open for walking, hiking, and biking as well. This is a great opportunity to look up a local/regional trail that you haven’t been to before and go exploring! Ontario Trails’ ‘Find a Trail’ feature is a helpful resource if you’re looking for new or additional options.

Go for a Drive

Get a road trip playlist ready, pack some snacks or grab one to eat outside from your local ONroute, find a drive through to pick up a summery beverage, and explore an area or region that you haven’t seen before. Whether it’s your own city or the next one over, take the time to see something new around you.

Backyard Campout

Bring ‘staycationing’ to the next level with the ultimate backyard campout. Pitch a tent, make s’mores, project a movie, play games, and have a cozy night outdoors. This is something that kids and adults alike will get excited about. And the best part? Everything you need is still right inside!

Even though this summer will look differently for all of us, there are still so many ways to embrace the warm weather, get outside and be active, and make memories – all it takes is a little creativity. We hope you have an amazing, safe, and healthy summer and, of course, we’re always ready to welcome you at ONroute for all your road trip needs!
